This week’s notable storylines…
- Colorado State and Colorado renew the oldest active series in each program’s history. The teams first met on Feb. 11, 1893, in Fort Collins.
- The latest installment, the 2010 Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown, returns the rivalry to Denver. Last year, the Rams went into Boulder and registered their first Folsom Field win in 23 years.
- CSU bids for its first set of consecutive wins over the Buffs since 1999-2000, when the Rams won the first two MWC titles. CSU was 14th in the final 2000 polls.
- That also marked the last time the Rams won season openers in consecutive years, something they can do Saturday. CSU in 1994 kicked off seven straight seasons (1994-2000) with a win, until losing to the Buffs in ‘01.
- CSU’s Pete Thomas, believed to be the nation’s only true freshman QB scheduled to start his team’s opener this week, makes his college debut.
- Each team finished 3-9 in 2009, but each squad has changed dramatically. Several players on both sidelines will make their first move toward household-name status this weekend, including a pair of FBS transfers, CSU RB Raymond Carter (UCLA) and CU WR Toney Clemons (Michigan).
- Possibly seven true freshmen could make their CSU debut.
- The Rams have won four of their last five non-conference games. They’ve also won six of their last eight, since their last trip to Denver, a season-opening loss to CU Aug. 31, 2008.
