This week’s notable storylines…
- CSU welcomes to town the No. 5 Horned Frogs, tied for the highest-ranked team to ever to play at Hughes (CU also was No. 5 in 1996).
- TCU leaves the DFW Metroplex for the first time in 2010. The Frogs’ first four games were either in Fort Worth or Dallas, including Friday at SMU, giving TCU an extra day’s rest before playing CSU. The Rams, meanwhile, are the only team in the nation without a home game over their first three 2010 dates. However, the Rams continue a stretch in which they play three of four in Fort Collins. TCU plays in DFW seven times over its first eight dates, with Fort Collins the Frogs’ only trip.
- CSU opens conference play, its 12th season in the Mountain West. The Rams have won three of their last five conference openers, including a dramatic triumph over UNLV in 2008, the last time CSU opened conference at home.
- The Rams conclude a challenging four-week stretch in which they face three of the six most experienced quarterbacks in the nation: Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick (38 career starts) on Sept. 11, Idaho’s Nathan Enderle (37) and TCU’s Andy Dalton (41).
- Like 2009, when the Rams had by far the steepest three-game hill in the nation to open conference play (BYU, Utah, TCU), CSU again draws two of the toughest teams in the conference to begin 2010: TCU and Air Force. After hosting UNLV Oct. 16, the Rams then travel to No. 13/12 Utah on Oct. 23.
- Pete Thomas and Raymond Carter, the Rams’ four-star backfield, come off their best games this season.
