This week’s notable storylines…
- Two future conference mates meet in prime-time on ESPNU. Nevada announced last month it would join the Mountain West Conference.
- The Rams have won four of their last six non-conference games. They’ve also won six of their last nine, since their 2008 trip to Denver, a season-opening loss to CU.
- CSU bids for its first win since Sept. 19, 2009, when the Rams improved to 3-0 and knocked off Nevada 35-20 in Fort Collins, earning more votes in both national polls. After that loss to the Rams, Nevada went 8-1 before losing to Boise State in the season finale and SMU in the Hawaii Bowl.
- CSU also looks for its first road victory in more than a year, since a resounding 23-17 win at Colorado to open the ‘09 campaign, Sept. 6, 2009.
- The Rams begin a challenging four-week stretch in which they face three of the six most experienced quarterbacks in the nation. Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick (34 career starts) this week, Idaho’s Nathan Enderle (33) and TCU’s Andy Dalton (37) lay ahead on CSU’s schedule.
- In contrast, true freshman QB Pete Thomas makes his second start for the Rams, looking for his first TD pass. One of seven true freshmen to play for the Rams last week, he needs just 1,009 passing yards to break Caleb Hanie’s 2004 freshman record.
- CSU has enjoyed consistent historical success against Nevada, leading the all-time series 9-1-0. However, the Rams’ only loss in the 36-year-old series was CSU’s last trip to Reno, a 28-10 setback on Sept. 16, 2006. All-time in Reno, CSU is 3-1.
