CSU's Cranston earns academic honor

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—There are two parts to being a student-athlete. It’s easy for fans to see Dana Cranston’s excellent play on the court, but on Thursday, the junior from Fort St. John, British Columbia, was honored for her excellence in the classroom, earning her second Capital One Academic All-District honor.
Cranston, a business administration major who holds a 3.93 cumulative grade point average, was selected to the District 7 second team. District 7 encompasses all Division-I schools from the states of Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
She is one of two Mountain West selections, joining New Mexico’s Kelly Williamson (District 7 first team), and is one of just two recipients who hail from Canada. Cranston was also named to the District 7 second team in 2010.
The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Nominated student-athletes were then selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Cranston, a two-time academic all-Mountain West selection, enters Thursday’s match at TCU second on the team with 2.31 kills per set, and leads the league with 0.44 service aces per set in conference matches.
