FORT COLLINS, Colo. – For the fourth year in a row, the CSU football program’s offensive and defensive players will once again compete in the Rams Superstars Competition, held this Friday at 6 p.m. at Moby Arena. Admission and parking are free.
The event will give Head Coach Steve Fairchild a chance to showcase the talent of the 2011 football roster, set to begin its new season this fall.
In a competition described as an American Gladiators-style battle, the offense will battle its defensive teammates in front of a crowd to determine which will have the bragging rights for this summer until the season starts again next fall. The event is an excellent chance for both students and families to take advantage of a first-hand look at the 2011 football program.
The competition is scheduled at the completion of spring football and before preliminary summer conditioning will begin.
The competition was created by Fairchild in 2008 as a fun and fan-friendly event to serve as the ending point for spring practices and signify the beginning of the summer conditioning. The competition will be a combination of activities seen at the NFL combine, NBA All-Star Saturday, and pro wrestling. The Rams will compete in several contests that include an obstacle course, tug of war, weight lifting competitions, the Tower of Terror (running vertical jump) and a race called Beat the Elite, to determine the fastest student on campus. There will also be a guest tug of war competition between two fraternities.
Individual athletes will be called down to demonstrate their own unique abilities. All players will be divided into three categories by their positions. The divisions will be skill weight (wide receivers and defensive backs), middle weight (tight ends, offensive backs, and linebackers), and heavyweight (linemen). The scoreboard in Moby Arena will track the totals of each unit as the competition progresses.
Last season, the offense won, 16-7, with several momentous highlights. Linebacker Mike Orakpo cleared an amazing 64 inches in the Tower of Terror. Nose tackle Guy Miller completed an impressive 30 reps in the 225-pound bench press, but it was still not enough to overcome Jake Gdowski’s 32 reps to give him the victory.
Fans will get a chance to come onto the court to meet the players and have autographs signed at the completion of the exciting evening.
