FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Rams got a slight break at practice Thursday afternoon as they took to the practice fields south of Moby Arena in shorts and shoulder pads.
Head Coach Steve Fairchild wanted to keep everybody healthy going into Saturday’s scrimmage, but that didn’t stop the players from going 100 percent.
One of the players who brought his ‘A’ game Thursday afternoon was Charles Lovett. After missing the first two practices while finishing up a history class, Lovett has continuously showed why he should be playing come September.
During a skeleton period Lovett was being smothered by Elijah-Blu Smith but made an incredible catch. He was able to stop on a dime and snag an underthrown pass, while Smith continued running. Then later in practice during a red zone thud scrimmage Lovett demonstrated his 4.4 speed. He reached for a pass that was off target and hauled it in. He then gathered himself and broke to the outside turning on the afterburners. Lovett beat everybody to the end zone; nobody laid a finger on him.
The defensive backs also put together a solid practice, especially during the red zone scrimmage. Momo Thomas, Ivory Herd, Ezra Thompson, Dominique Vinson and Trent Matthews all had interceptions inside the 10-yard line.
CSU has one more on-campus practice Friday morning before taking the field at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium on Saturday for its first scrimmage of fall. Saturday’s scrimmage is at 2 p.m. and is open to the public. Restrooms and concessions will not be available.
Consequences: Garrett Grayson learned the hard way that there are consequences for mental mistakes. This morning during a two-minute drill in which the offense lined up against its own goal line Grayson took a safety instead of throwing the ball away. Fairchild wanted to make sure this wasn’t going to happen again so he made the freshman run to the Lory Student Center and back.
Strong second option: M.J. McPeek is quietly putting together a successful week of practices. Thursday McPeek connected on four straight passes of 15 yards or more during a thud period. One of his best plays was when he avoided a strong pass rush from his blindside and delivered a strike to Lee Clubb.
Good eating: The Rams, who were treated to watermelon slices by Athletes in Action Thursday morning, will grub at C.B. & Potts before continuing meetings Thursday night.
