FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Head Coach Steve Fairchild on Tuesday announced that the Rams have signed former University of Washington recruit Brent Williams to a financial-aid agreement.
Williams becomes CSU’s fourth summer addition to its 2011 roster, joining LB Shaquil Barrett (Nebraska-Omaha), LB Cordarius Golston (Kilgore College/Arizona) and offensive lineman A.J. Frieler (Greeley West/Air Force).
The highly touted 6-4, 210-pound defensive end joins Colorado State with four years of eligibility, an available redshirt year, and the option of playing immediately. Williams, who originally committed to play at the University of Washington, never enrolled as a grayshirt in January. After spending the spring at Los Angeles Valley Community College, where he did not play football, Williams is eager to get back on the field.
Combined as a junior and senior at Taft High School in Woodland Hills, Calif., Williams compiled 29 sacks, an impressive 1.16 per game, while starting all 25 contests at defensive end for the Toreadors from 2008-09. Scout.com rated him the No. 66 outside linebacker in the nation.
As a junior, Williams tied a school record with 17 sacks and broke the Los Angeles City Section record with 29 tackles for loss, totaling 211 yards. A first-team all-West Valley League and second-team all-city selection, he finished second in voting for the City Section Defensive Lineman of the Year.
During his senior season in 2009, Williams recorded 42 total tackles, 12 sacks, five forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles, which earned him a spot on the Los Angeles Times all-area team. The Los Angeles Daily News later named him second-team all-area, after he helped the Toreadors to the second round of the L.A. City Section playoffs.
Williams plans to study criminal justice or kinesiology while at Colorado State.
