This week’s notable storylines…
- CSU opens its 113th season of college football, Year 4 of the Steve Fairchild era, and the Rams are young but not inexperienced.
- The Rams kick off a campaign with a conference game for the first time since Sept. 3, 1994, 17 years to the day, when CSU won at Air Force en route to a storybook 10-2 season. Across the country this weekend, only two other games feature teams from the same conference.
- When not beginning a schedule with the CU Buffs, CSU has won seven straight and nine of its last 11.
- Pete Thomas will become the Rams’ first returning starter at QB since Caleb Hanie in 2007.
- Starting Lobos QB Tarean Austin is reunited with his favorite high-school receiver, true freshman Charles Lovett. The two joined forces at historic Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla. Lovett replaced a graduated Austin as the signal-caller in 2010.
- The Rams are expected to play up to seven true freshmen.
uAustin and Crockett Gillmore could become the first CSU brothers to start the same game since Erik and Morgan Pears in the ‘02 Liberty Bowl. - CSU bids to snap an 11-game road losing streak, which began after the ‘09 win at Colorado. It’s the Rams’ longest streak since a 16-game slide, ended in 1989 with a victory at New Mexico.
- A walk-off field goal has decided three of the last five games in the series.
