DALLAS, Texas - Preseason accolades keep rolling in for Rams center Weston Richburg. For the second year in a row, the senior has been named to the prestigious Outland Trophy watch list. The award is given to the nation’s top interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The list, which includes 75 student-athletes, was released Thursday morning.
The honor is no surprise considering Richburg’s strong 2012 season which saw him earn an All-Mountain West honorable mention for the second time while being a stalwart on an offensive line that saw five different combinations of starting offensive linemen.
Under Richburg’s leadership, the Rams’ running game sprung to life over the final five games of 2012, exploding for 169.9 rushing yards per game, up from just 99.7 yards on the ground in the first seven contests.
The Bushland, Texas, native was also named to the 2013 Rimington Award watch list recognizing the nation’s top centers earlier this summer as well as garnering first-team preseason All-Mountain West honors from Phil Steele’s 2013 College Football Preview.
The former first-team All-Mountain West selection (2011) has now played in every game of his career at CSU (36) and was named one of the top-20 interior linemen in the nation in 2012 by Yahoo! Sports.
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are nominated to be part of the FWAA All-America team. The FWAA All-America committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the three Outland finalists to be named on Nov. 25th. Finally, committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner who will be announced on January 9th, 2014, at a presentation banquet held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Omaha, Neb.
