2014 Fall Camp notebook: Day 9

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Tuesday was the first scrimmage of Fall Camp at Hughes Stadium, which means the players were back out on the practice field early Wednesday morning for the third of seven two-a-days.
"You always kind of worry about days like this, coming off a big scrimmage," Head Coach Jim McElwain said. "But today we really got an answer as to what kind of guys we've got. That really makes you feel good about the intensity of the guys here."
Wednesday was a light walk-thru practice in shells for the Rams, and you can really see the competition between players starting to pick up.
"As we always say, competition is the thing that makes each player really push themselves," McElwain said. "We brought in some really good players this year, the kind of players that are going to see the field soon. We've got some serious depth now, which means a lot of guys can come in and really contribute to this team."
The team continued their special teams work today, and McElwain is excited to see players strive to be a part of that unit.
"It's no longer just about fighting for an offensive or defensive position, now they're fighting to be that left gunner," McElwain said. "They're fighting to be the wing on punts. You're a starter on special teams before you're ever a starter on offense or defense, and I think that kind of mentality can really motivate these young players."
The Rams will continue their Fall Camp on Wednesday evening with a 7:15 practice. They'll continue to push hard during these two-a-days, and will have another closed scrimmage on Monday, Aug. 18.
Fall Camp Notebook
James Update: Junior linebacker Cory James, who had a minor operation to clean up his knee, is expected to return to practice next week, McElwain said.
Jake Schlager: Sophomore defensive back Jake Schlager suffered a leg injury during Tuesday's scrimmage.
"It's not broken, but he's going to be out for a little while with that leg," McElwain said.
