CLEVELAND – Colorado State is ranked among the top-performing athletic programs in the country through the first half of the 2014-15 academic year, earning 144 points in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall standings. The total is ranked second among Mountain West institutions and 35th overall.

CSU trails only New Mexico (146.5), and owns the third-highest ranking for FBS non-Power 5 institutions (UConn, 150; New Mexico). The fall point total is the second-most in CSU history. The Rams earned 157 points and a 14th-place finish in the 2000-01 fall standings.

“This is a tremendous achievement by our student-athletes and coaches, and reflects the hard work, discipline and integrity they display on a daily basis,” said interim athletics director John Morris. “It also speaks to the incredible support we receive from the University to strive for excellence in everything we do. It’s an exciting time to be a Ram!”

Eight sports are taken into account during the fall standings. CSU participates in five of the eight sports, and scored in three of them. The Rams earned 64 points for advancing to the NCAA volleyball Regional Semifinals, 55 points for the men’s cross country team finishing 19th at the NCAA Championships and 25 points for the football team earning a bowl game berth.

Looking at schools which compete in five fall sports or fewer, CSU ranks 15th nationally, including first in the Mountain West and first among FBS non-Power 5 institutions.

Head Coach Tom Hilbert and the volleyball team won a sixth-consecutive Mountain West championship, advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 and ranking as high as No. 6 nationally. The men’s cross country team had an impressive showing at the NCAA Championships, moving up eight spots to finish 19th. The football team had a banner season, as well, posting 10 wins for the first time since 2002, being ranked in both major polls and competing in a bowl game for the second year in a row.

For the first time in school history, the football, men’s basketball, volleyball and men’s cross country teams have all been ranked during the academic year. CSU is one of 11 schools nationwide to earn national rankings in football, men’s basketball and volleyball this season.

Points are awarded based on a team’s finish in the NCAA championship postseason for all sports except football. FBS football teams earn points based on their final ranking in the USA Today poll or bowl game outcome.

The point system was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA) and USA Today. Points will continue to be awarded throughout the season for each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s. The winter rankings will be released March 19 and the final standings for the academic year will be posted in June after the conclusion of the men’s baseball season.
