FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State senior Adrianna Culbert has racked up another national award after being named espnW National Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Culbert, who was named AVCA National Player of the Week on Oct. 20, posted her seventh triple-double of the season at Boise State on Thursday, totaling 14 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs in CSU’s sweep of the second-place team in the Mountain West. Culbert followed that performance with another terrific match at Utah State on Saturday, registering nine kills on .615 hitting to go along with 27 assists, eight digs and five blocks.
The Delton, Michigan, native had three-straight triple doubles from Oct. 13-20, including the first quadruple-double in the NCAA in five years at San Jose State on Oct. 17. In that match, Culbert had 10 kills, 20 assists, 13 digs and a career-high 11 blocks, marking the first four-set quadruple-double in the current 25-point rally-scoring format.
Culbert, a two-time honorable mention All-American and 2015 Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year, is tied for the national lead in triple-doubles with Jo-Leigh Vervelde of Western Carolina. However, Culbert has recorded her seven triple-doubles in 32 fewer sets than Vervelde, and of all the players in the nation with at least five triple-doubles, Culbert is the only to do so in fewer than 70 sets played.
Four of Culbert’s triple-doubles have come in sweeps. Prior to this season, there had only been one three-set triple-double in program history (Diane Saba in 1986). Culbert’s first triple-double of the year (and of her career) came against UC Davis on Aug. 29, marking the first by a CSU player since Ashley Fornstrom in 2007. Overall, Culbert owns the CSU and Mountain West records for triple-doubles in a career and in a season.
CSU will host San Diego State tomorrow at Moby Arena at 7 p.m., followed by a meeting on Halloween night against Nevada at 7:30 p.m. MT.
