FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The NCAA announced on Monday afternoon that Colorado State tight end Kivon Cartwright has been granted an extension of eligibility waiver, and will compete in the 2015 season.
“I’m so excited to play again and to be a part of Colorado State,” Cartwright said. “I’ll get another year, another season around the guys and my brothers who I’ve grown so close too. I’m amazed right now. I’m so thankful for everybody that worked hard through this process. God is good, God is always good. Through the ups and the downs, He’ll never leave you, nor forsake you. I’m so blessed. Blessed to be a part of the program for another year.”
Cartwright played the 2014 season-opener vs. Colorado, catching one pass for 22 yards, before re-injuring his ankle, which had limited him through spring and fall camp. On Dec. 22, the Mountain West granted the tight end a medical hardship waiver. Since he only played in one game, Cartwright met the requirements for a medical hardship waiver, a necessary step to pursue an extension of eligibility waiver. Once that was received, CSU applied for the extension of eligibility waiver with the NCAA, which is only approved for student-athletes who have lost two seasons of competition for reasons beyond their control. As a true freshman in 2010, Cartwright did not play because of a knee injury.
“We’re very excited for Kivon Cartwright, with everything he’s been through,” head coach Mike Bobo said. “He’s worked extremely hard to get back to this point, and I know his teammates are also very excited that he will be back with them for one more year. It’s going to be fun to see him back out on that field in 2015.”
The native of Pueblo, Colo., has 57 receptions for 857 yards and nine touchdowns in 32 games for the Rams. Cartwright will graduate with a master’s in management practice in Dec. 2015.
