The Rams returned from spring break for their third practice of the spring season on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams practiced in shells for the first time in 2015.

A one-week break in the middle of spring practice may be new to Colorado State football fans, but it is something head Coach Mike Bobo is familiar with.

"Most of the time at Georgia that is what we did, because of the way spring break fell," Bobo said. "Now that they've moved recruiting up the calendar, you want to try and finish somewhere in the middle of April so you can get out on the road. It used to be that you couldn't go until May, so you had the whole month of April, and you could go (start spring practice) after spring break. Now where they've got the calendar you've got to try and get something in before, or you end up having to go four days a week."

The good news for the coaching staff was that the retention of the first two practices carried over after the long break, which allowed the new coaching staff to continue with the third day of install. If the retention level had been low, the Rams would have spent today reviewing the first two practices.

"I thought the retention was OK," Bobo said. "We didn't hold off on install. We went ahead and installed day three which I thought was good. The thing that was a little disappointing was that we lost our energy. They ran out of a gas a little bit. But, like I told them after practice, we knew that was going to happen. When you go before spring break two days and then take basically 13 and 14 days off, it is a little bit difficult. It was good to go through a little adversity and make the push and fight through it, and realize we have a long way to go."

The Rams, who will go through their first three-practice week of spring, will return to the practice facility south of Moby Arena on Thursday afternoon for the fourth practice.

SPRING BREAK: Head coach Mike Bobo went back to Georgia for part of the break, where his family is living as his children finish out the school year.

"I just hung out with the family," Bobo said. "My son did catch an eight-pound bass in the neighborhood pond, so that was fun. Other than that, I just hung out with the family, watched a couple basketball games and came back a little early to get to work. It was good to get home."

QUARTERBACK UPDATE: Bobo isn't going to name a starting quarterback yet, but he did talk about what he likes from the group and what he wants to see after Tuesday's practice.

"They're doing a good job," Bobo said. "They're being very diligent in their preparation. In the meeting room, there is no doubt that they understand what we want to do and how we want to do it. Now it is taking it from the meeting room onto the field, and executing it at a faster pace. I'm not talking about a no huddle pace, but seeing things faster, getting into our drops quicker, getting rid of the ball quicker with a lot of thinking going on. We have to be able to picture the formation, picture the plays and recognize the defense. They're still figuring out their first steps and who is declared. It is a learning process."

ONCE A RAM, ALWAYS A RAM: Bernard Blake, Tyler Clark, Aaron Davis and LaRyan King took in Tuesday's practice from the sidelines. Blake, Davis and King continue to workout in Fort Collins for a chance to play at the next level.
