CSU Fall Camp Notebook: Day 12

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Nearly two weeks into training camp, head coach Mike Bobo said Wednesday that his team is on schedule in terms of where he expected it to be at this point.
“Oh yeah, as far as the install, we’ve got about everything in,” Bobo said. “There’ll be something every week that we might change or tinker with, but we’re playing ball. We’re still in camp mode, but we’re running plays and trying to perfect those plays, trying to bring it every day. I feel good about where we’re at as a unit.”
Over the past several days, Bobo has expressed a desire to apply more pressure on the quarterback, and on Wednesday, he finally got what he has been preaching.
“Today was the first day we actually had some pass rush,” he said. “SteveO (Michel) had two, maybe three sacks; there were a lot of sacks today. We’ve got to be able to get to the quarterback, not necessarily a sack, but affecting the quarterback. We’ve got to get to him and put pressure on him.”
Bobo also discussed the importance of special teams play.
“We probably spend more time on special teams than a lot of places in the country,” Bobo said. “A lot of people are getting reps and getting action. We’ve got to make sure we get people involved. There might be some players, like Eric Williams, who might not play on offense or defense, but he’s going to be on probably three special teams.”
Several players were once again held out of practice, with Bobo noting that many of them could probably play if it were a game, but that they’re choosing to be cautious.
“We’ve really got a lot of guys banged up in there, and it’s a fine line of making sure they get the work in and then making sure you’re taking care of them, too.”
While the setbacks are unfortunate, they’ve given other players the opportunity to step in, particularly at running back, offensive line and the secondary.
“It makes you a little thinner, but it also gives guys an opportunity to get some reps and prove themselves.”
Twice as nice: CSU will hold a second practice, its 16th of fall camp, Wednesday evening, before taking the day off Thursday. The team will still have team meetings and other functions, but will also use the day to treat and rest up before the final three practices of camp.
Surprise visitors: The Rams were greeted at the end of practice by the CSU marching band and cheerleaders. The spirit squad was on hand to help teach the newcomers the fight song, which is sung after every home victory. The band handed out lyrics and the team and band rehearsed it several times.
