COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State football coach Mike Bobo has continuously stressed the importance of special teams, and on Monday two members of the unit were recognized. Freshman kicker Wyatt Bryan was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week and junior punter Hayden Hunt was named the Ray Guy Award Player of the Week.
In his second collegiate game, Bryan was perfect on two field-goal attempts and two extra points. His 26-yard, third-quarter field goal brought CSU to within three points, and his PAT conversion moments later - after a 49-yard touchdown reception by Joe Hansley - put the Rams on top, 17-13, early in the fourth quarter.
While the Rams held the lead for the majority of the game, Minnesota was able to score a go-ahead touchdown with 55 seconds remaining in the contest, before CSU quickly marched down the field to the 20-yard line. After being iced twice by the Minnesota sideline, Bryan nailed a 37-yard field goal as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
After not being needed in a blowout victory over Savannah State a week prior, Hunt was called upon nine times Saturday against Minnesota. His first punt traveled 55 yards, and on the day, he averaged 49.6 yards per punt. He had three punts go for 50-plus yards and four land inside the 20-yard line.
The biggest one came in the second quarter. Kicking from deep inside CSU territory, Hunt's punt rolled all the way to the Minnesota 2-yard line before being downed. The punt of 73 yards was the eighth-longest in school history, and the longest since Pete Kontodiakos in 2012.
Hunt is a two-time candidate for the Ray Guy Award, and already this year has been named to the award's watch list.
