The Colorado State Rams wrapped up their 10th practice of fall camp on Saturday morning, marking their first time back out on the field since Thursday’s scrimmage. Having had a chance to review film from the scrimmage, head coach Mike Bobo was able to give more insight as to what he saw from the team.
“The No. 1 thing I saw was great effort, offensively and defensively” Bobo said. “We didn’t play our technique right all the time, which is gonna happen in the first scrimmage, but I saw guys flying around and making plays.”
Coach Bobo continues to be impressed with the newcomers, repeatedly mentioning Michael Gallup, Marvin Kinsey, Jamal Hicks and others, but also stressed the fact that they can no longer just rely on their athleticism and must continue to develop as complete players.
“Your athletic ability is only going to take you so far,” Bobo said. “It’s going to put you in a position to be successful, but they have to everyday hone in on their craft. They made a few plays, but now it’s our job to help them continue to become complete players.”
Junior receiver Sammie Long is among the veterans who has stood out thus far in fall camp, and Bobo was very vocal about the improvements he’s seen in him this offseason.
“He’s made plays when the ball has come to him. In the past he’s kind of struggled with the deep ball, but he’s really made a lot plays down the field in tight coverage. The first time we ran the 1-minute drill, the offense actually won because of two deep balls that Sammie caught. It’s good to see him make plays.”
The Rams will continue to break down film of the first scrimmage and have eight more practices – including a second practice Saturday evening – before their next scrimmage on Aug. 20. With move-in day for the rest of the university just around the corner, the team will be moving out of the dorms on Sunday morning before practice No. 12 that afternoon.
#NextLevelRams: With the NFL preseason games officially beginning on Thursday night, most of the #NextLevelRams were in action this weekend, many of them playing in their first career games.
Rashard ‘Hollywood’ Higgins hauled in a 10-yard touchdown reception for his only catch of the game in the Browns’ loss to the Packers, and both Cory James and Joe Hansley saw action for the Oakland Raiders, with James recording five tackles including a tackle for a loss. Kivon Cartwright recorded a 4-yard catch for the Buccaneers in their loss to the Eagles, and cornerback DeAndre Elliott is slated to make his NFL debut for the Seahawks in Saturday night’s game against the Chiefs.
Shaquil Barrett and Kapri Bibbs, both entering their third season with the Denver Broncos, played in the Thursday night win over the Bears, with Bibbs recording 53 yards on 15 carries. Garrett Grayson, in his second season with the Saints, went 10-of-16 for 93 yards with one interception in a loss to the Patriots.
