The Colorado State Rams were back on the practice field Monday for their 13th session of fall camp. The Rams donned full padding today, and head coach Mike Bobo was pleased with the effort on both sides of the ball.
Following practice, Bobo discussed some of the players who are flying under the radar and perhaps haven’t received as much praise as they deserve. He singled out redshirt sophomore Marcus Wilson, who switched to receiver in the spring after starting his career at Colorado State as a defensive back.
“Marcus has done a great job,” Bobo said. “He’s very conscientious – he knows what to do. He’s a solid No. 1 when we go with three receivers and I’m really proud of him.”
Bobo also mentioned junior linebacker Deshon Mayes and defensive back Kevin Nutt as players who are standing out thus far in camp. Mayes, a graduate of Pomona High School, began his collegiate career at Glendale Community College but is now entering his second season with the Rams.
“He’s (Mayes) really earning the coaching staff’s trust. He’s getting more No. 1 reps while Kevin Davis has been out the last couple days… Kevin Nutt is a guy who has played a lot of special teams but has now moved himself into a No. 1 cornerback spot.”
After graduating all four defensive linemen, the Rams are in need of someone to step up and fill those spots, and Bobo mentioned Johnny Schupp as a player who’s done that so far.
“Schupp has played every position. We’re really proud of Schupp. A guy that consistently shows up in the pass rush is Johnny Schupp. He does a nice job of getting off blocks and has a couple moves. He does a really nice job.”

Unlike the defensive line, running back is a position in which the Rams brought back a great deal of their production with Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews, but Bobo mentioned some of the newcomers who’ve turned heads and could see some playing time as freshmen this year.
“It’s tough to tell with running backs when it’s not live,” Bobo said. “But a couple times when we have gone live, Marvin (Kinsey, Jr.) has really stood out, breaking tackles. Marvin’s put on some nice weight, and if we were playing today he’d probably be the third back. But (Rashaad) Boddie’s getting better. We’re starting to see a good lean with him.”
The Rams will be back on the field Tuesday morning for practice No. 14 and continue to prep for Saturday’s scrimmage which will conclude fall camp. Classes begin on Aug. 22 and the Rams will adapt a new practice schedule.
