Gallup, Dawkins have career days as Rams rally late
The Colorado State Rams rallied from 11 points down in the second half to beat Nevada 44-42 last night. The fourth-largest crowd in CSU history (36,765) watch the Rams improve to 3-0 in Mountain West play for the first time since 2002.
The game was CSU's first on-campus Homecoming since October of 1967, and the first night game on campus since the 1966 season.
Seniors Michael Gallup and Dalyn Dawkins each had career days in an important home win.
Senior wide out Michael Gallup put on a show under the lights on Saturday, hauling in 13 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns.
The 263 yards were a career high and were just two yards shy of the single-game CSU record, set by teammate Olabisi Johnson in the Idaho Potato Bowl last season. His 13 catches tied a career high, as did his three TD receptions.
Gallup now has three 200-plus yard games in his career (no other Ram has had more than one). Gallup had 212 yards at Hawai'i on Sept. 30, meaning he has had 200-plus yards in two of his last three outings.
The Monroe, Ga., product now ranks seventh in school history in career receiving yards, posting 2,220 in just 20 games (111.0 per game). He is also tied for fifth all time in receiving TDs (19).
Senior Dalyn Dawkins ran for 191 yards on just 17 carries last night. The yardage total beat his previous career high by 40 yards (151 versus UNLV in 2015).
Dawkins turned it on when CSU needed him to most – in the second half. Dawkins had 134 yards in the second half, including a 59-yard TD run. The run cut Nevada's lead from 11 to just 4, with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter.
Dawkins has 12 100-yard games in his career, which ranks fifth in CSU history. He also cracked the top 10 in career rushing yards (2,474), passing Chris Nwoke.
CSU had 608 yards of total offense, marking the third time this year the team has had at least 600 yards, and fourth time in the last eight games, dating back to last season.
The Rams have exceeded 500 yards of total offense five times this season and 14 times under Head Coach Mike Bobo and Offensive Coordinator Will Friend.
CSU is 5-0 this season when posting at least 500 yards of total offense.
The Rams are 3-0 in league play for the first time since 2002. For their efforts, the Rams sit alone atop the Mountain division, and are one of just two squads in the conference with 3-0 records (Fresno State is also 3-0 in the West division).
CSU opened league play with a 6-0 mark in 2002 on its way to a conference championship – the most recent title in program history.
CSU scored a touchdown on its opening drive (a 56-yard TD pass from Nick Stevens to Michael Gallup) for the third game in a row.
The Rams have scored 7 points in their opening drive in four of their last five games, including all three MW games.
The early scoring has been a trend lately for CSU, and has led to early advantages – the Rams have been leading or tied at the end of the first quarter in 11 of their last 14 games dating back to last season.
Saturday was CSU's first on-campus Homecoming in nearly 50 years (Oct. 21, 1967 was the last), and fans flocked the new stadium for the spectacle under the lights.
The attendance was 36,765 – the fourth-largest crowd for a CSU home game ever. It was also CSU's second sellout of the season and the third game of 2017 that CSU has sold all of its tickets for a game (the Oct. 28 Air Force matchup has sold out – students can still claim tickets here).
After going 10 years without a sold-out game, from 2004-2014 (Last: Oct. 22, 2004, vs. Wyoming), the Rams have sold out seven of their last 19 home games:
o Oct. 18, 2014, Utah State, 32,546
o Oct. 25, 2014, Wyoming, 32,529
o Sept. 12, 2015, Minnesota, 32,500
o Oct. 17, 2015, Air Force, 32,546
o Oct. 1, 2016, Wyoming, 33,500
