November 6, 1954 – The 1954 season will not go down as one of the greatest in CSU history and marks the worst record Coach Bob Davis had in any single season. Due to military commitments, many of the Colorado A&M football players had been excused from their collegiate training to serve in the Army. Although the Korean War had its ceasefire agreement on July 27, 1953, by the 1954 football season many men still had to be trained in case the hostilities flared up again.

Gary Glick, a native of Nebraska and hometown hero from nearby LaPorte, Colorado had already served in the Navy and came back to A&M for his collegiate career. Despite being named to a military All-America football team, Glick still had to play freshman football in 1952 and immediately made an impact on the 1953 team. By 1954, the 24-year-old junior wanted to branch out and play other sports like he did while serving in the Navy.

In a 2008 interview, Glick said, "I wanted to play for the baseball team because I had played in the Navy, so after tryouts in the spring I was told by Coach Davis that he did not have a quarterback for the 1954 season and he could not allow me to play baseball, so my baseball career at Colorado A&M was very short-lived."

Glick made the switch to quarterback from the halfback position in Davis' T-Formation style of game, but with few veteran athletes on the team, the season was a struggle. On November 6th, the Rams faced the University of Utah, a team that had dominated Colorado A&M for several years. The Utes had won the 1951, 1952 and 1953 Skyline Conference championships while the Rams could only get as high as 3rd in the conference. The Utes were heavy favorites when they came to Colorado Field that day while the Aggies had only won two games all season.

Gary Glick took control of what seemed to be the entire Aggie team both on offense and defense. He blocked a Utah extra point, scored two touchdowns and both extra points and intercepted a key pass to help seal the victory. His last touchdown came with less than a minute on the clock and tied the score at 13. Glick then calmly kicked the PAT to put the Rams up 14-13 for good.

For his efforts, the Associated Press named Glick the Back of the Week, the first weekly national individual award given to any CSU football player. Glick played is senior season in 1955 as a halfback and along with those men returning from military service won the Skyline Conference championship. He was chosen as the number one pick in the 1956 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played six seasons in the NFL and one in the AFL.
