Twelve Colorado State football players and three incoming freshmen earned academic recognition by the National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter, including five first-team honorees.
Faton Bauta (adult education, graduate degree), Wyatt Bryan (mechanical engineering), Patrick Elsenbast (history), Elroy Masters, Jr. (business administration) and Nolan Peralta (biological sciences) earned 2016 NFF Academic All-Colorado first-team honors. For Bryan and Peralta, it was the second year in a row.
Additionally, Zack Golditch (sociology), Collin Hill (undeclared), Hayden Hunt (political science), Kevin Nutt, Jr. (communication studies), Jake Schlager (business administration), Trent Sieg (mechanical engineering) and Nick Stevens (business administration) earned honorable mention nods. Hunt, Nutt, Sieg and Stevens were also recognized a year ago.
The criteria to qualify for first-team academic recognition is a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher (3.0-3.29 for honorable mention), in addition to at least a 70-percent participation rate as a starter or regular contributor. In total, 162 student-athletes (80 first-team, 82 honorable mention) received recognition across the 10 collegiate football programs in the state of Colorado..@CSURams contingent at @NFFNetwork Colo. In addition to the 12 current Rams, #RAMPAGE17 members Marcus McElroy (Mullen High School), Corte Tapia (Windsor High School) and Judd Erickson (Mountain Vista) were three of 14 prep stars recognized as prep scholar-athletes.
The awards were part of the 24th annual Colorado Chapter National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet, which took place Monday evening at the Denver West Marriott. In addition to McElroy and Tapia’s recognition, Hunt was awarded the 2016 Special Teams Player of the Year plaque for the second year in a row, which was announced in December.
Joining Hunt on the All-Colorado team were Jake Bennett (second team), Kevin Davis, Michael Gallup and Fred Zerblis.
