FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Former Colorado State defensive backs Trent Matthews and Kevin Pierre-Louis have signed to play with the Edmonton Eskimos and Ottawa Redblacks, respectively, of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
A four-year starter for the Rams, Matthews finished his collegiate career in 2015 having amassed 273 tackles and 10 interceptions. As a senior, he was named to the prestigious AFCA Allstate Good Works Team—the most-esteemed off-the-field honor in college football.
The two-time All-Mountain West honoree was slated to begin his masters program and join the Rams' coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 2017 season, but will defer the opportunity to continue his playing career.
Also a 2015 graduate, Pierre-Louis made 37 career starts for the Rams, totaling 281 tackles and five forced fumbles. As a senior, he ranked sixth among Mountain West defensive backs with 6.8 tackles per game.
Matthews and Pierre-Louis are expected to play defensive back and linebacker for their new teams, with the CFL season kicking off on June 22. The Eskimos and Redblacks are set to square off twice in the 2017 season, with Edmonton hosting on July 14 and Ottawa hosting on Aug. 10.
