Players continuing to compete early in preseason camp

The Colorado State Rams continued fall camp with their third practice of 2017. Head Coach Mike Bobo noted another strong day for the defense as the Rams finished up their first full weekend of practice.

The Rams hosted special guests today, with the annual outing to recognize and thank the emergency service organizations of northern Colorado. Those invited included personnel and families from Poudre Fire Authority, Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Fort Collins Police Services and the CSU Police Department.

Bobo acknowledged another strong collective effort by his squad on Sunday.

"I thought it was a really good day," Bobo stated. "I thought the energy was really good. I thought the guys were flying around, and finished the way I wanted them to finish."

Particularly noteworthy was the action on the defensive side of the ball. Over the first three days of camp, the energy level has been high as the team continues to prepare for its season-opening contest against Oregon State on Aug. 26.

"I've been really impressed with the defense and the energy that they've had, especially the first unit," Bobo said. "They're playing hard, playing fast, playing with enthusiasm. Good things are happening."

"I really liked what I saw today and I've really liked the three days. I've seen guys play hard and I've seen guys competing. It's what I've been looking for in three years, guys competing. I think we have some guys in here and we have a little bit of depth and some competition, which is good."

Senior defensive back Justin Sweet has stood out over the first few days of camp. The fifth-year Ram has seen first-team reps at cornerback during the first week.

"I've been pleased with Justin over the first three days," Bobo said. "He's put himself out there, he's challenged himself. He's probably had more good than bad. The message to him last night was 'I want you to continue to stress yourself in practice, put yourself out there, because that will build confidence'".

Kevin Nutt, Jr., has played at the nickel, along with freshmen Darius Campbell and Christian Cumber. Sophomore Anthony Hawkins has continued to play at corner after transitioning from wide receiver in the offseason.

Although pleased with the energy over the first three days of camp, Bobo told the media that they must continue to set the standard and the expectations every day.

"You get what you demand," Bobo said. "I have to demand that from the coordinators, coordinators have to demand from the coaches, and the coaches have to pass on the message to the players."

The team has four more practices before its first scrimmage of training camp on Saturday.

"We have to learn from our mistakes, coaches or players," Bobo said. "That's why we meet as coaches, that's why we meet coaches with players. We have to carry it over to the next day and continue to learn and continue to get better and control what we can control.

Aug. 5 Community Open House and scrimmage
August 5, 2017, will be a day of celebration for Colorado State University and the Fort Collins community. Several major events will come together around the much-anticipated first public look inside the new, on-campus multipurpose stadium, highlighted by CSU's annual Community Open House.

Events are scheduled throughout the day in the vicinity of the stadium. Inside, the Colorado State football team will hold an open practice, presented by Scheels, to allow fans to get their first look at Mike Bobo's 2017 team and also experience the stadium for the first time. Tickets are free, but must be claimed at the stadium ticket office on Aug. 5 to allow entry into the venue. The clear bag policy will be in effect for all fans entering the stadium, and Scheels will distribute 5,000 clear bags at stadium gates.
