Rams "learning how to win" in the summer heat

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams were back on the practice fields on a blistering Monday afternoon for their fourth practice of fall camp.

"I thought as coaches, we had to drive it a little bit today," Head coach Mike Bobo said. "It was a little bit warmer. We came out a little bit slow, but once we got going I thought we really competed well."

Holding practice at the hottest time of day is no coincidence; it's a strategy to help prepare for the season-opener and make up for lost conditioning from a shortened summer.

"I love that it's hot, and I love that we're on the turf where there's even more heat," Bobo said. "It's going to be hot at 12:30 p.m. on the first day (Aug. 26). We have to get ourselves in the best shape. It's a little bit different than a normal camp. We knew we were going to have to work ourselves into shape a little more than we had to the last few years."

Despite the shortened offseason, Bobo has been impressed with his team's energy and effort on the practice fields. Not afraid to push his players in the summer heat, he's confident that the Rams are learning how to win.

"We have to learn to push through. It's about putting yourself in the fourth quarter and learning how to finish when you're tired… learning how to win when you're tired. They fight through and finish practice, but we have to finish by winning."

The Rams will be in full pads tomorrow for the first time of training camp.

Ram alums visit practice
Visiting practice on Monday were former players Nick Callender and Matt Phillips. A 2016 graduate, Callender was named honorable mention All-Mountain West in his senior season as the Rams' starting left tackle. Matt Phillips—a favorite wide receiver of then-quarterback and now-director of player development Anthoney Hill—played at CSU from 1990-1994.
