Rams not letting poor weather slow them down
The Colorado State Rams held practice No. 15 of fall camp on Tuesday in the Indoor Practice Facility. The team has been at the mercy of an uncharacteristically stormy summer, but the coaching staff is proud of the way the guys have handled the adversity.
"[The weather] has been trying, dealing with the schedule," head coach Mike Bobo said. "The good thing is, we're not in school and we're not on a 20-hour week so we've been able to manage. Our guys have been mentally into it, they've stayed focused and haven't let the long delays affect them. It is what it is."
Bulking up the defensive line was an offseason emphasis of the Rams—through both recruiting and workouts—and Bobo has noticed a definite improvement in the unit.
"I've been really impressed with our top two units up front on the defensive line," Bobo said. "We've gotten a little bit bigger. Darnell Thompson is bigger, Jakob Buys is bigger, Richard King is bigger, Arjay [Jean] has been back in the mix in the last week or so, Toby [McBride] is starting to get a few reps, and Ellison Hubbard as well. They've played pretty well up front. There's some quickness at the nose guard position and it's been tough for our center to handle—which is a good thing. I feel good about that group in the way they've worked and the way they've prepared."
An improved defensive line means more gaps for the Rams linebacking corps to exploit. Senior Evan Colorito, who had 62 tackles as a junior last season, has been one of the hardest working Rams all fall, and Bobo believes he's set to make an even larger impact this season.
"I've mentioned Dalyn Dawkins and Bisi Johnson for how hard they practice, well Evan Colorito is the same way," Bobo said. "Everyday he gets after it and he's getting better at the craft of that buck [linebacker] position. He's more explosive this year and he's a tough guy. That's why we call him our bell cow, because everyday he is bringing it at practice."
The Rams will be back in full pads on Wednesday before taking Thursday off to help incoming freshmen move in to their dorms. Continue to check CSURams.com and follow @CSUFootball on Twitter for exclusive content and looks at 2017 training camp.
