Coaching staff brings lessons learned from scrimmage into practice

The Colorado State Rams were back on the practice field Monday, their first session since the public scrimmage on Saturday. On a rainy day that typically would have forced the Rams to their indoor practice facility, the team was still able to practice on their normal practice fields thanks to the new Shaw Sports Turf playing surface.

"A lot of people asked why we went with turf and not actual grass," head coach Mike Bobo said. "The weather here is sometimes an issue with rain and snow, and sometimes the fields get slick and aren't really safe. We used to have to go inside for safety issues. To go out there and have a practice and go full speed, and have guys practice the way they're supposed to practice—in the elements and in the rain—I thought it was a good day for us. The footing was great."

Having had a chance to watch the scrimmage film with his staff and players, Bobo was able to give a more detailed analysis of his takeaways from Saturday's action.

"Talking about the 1's, offensively, they had six drives and didn't have a three-and-out," Bobo said. "That was good, I thought they moved the ball well. We didn't try to run it a lot, we were working on the passing game and protection. We did run it some, and our yards-per-attempt was not high enough. I thought the defense did a good job against the run."

Transitioning to the No. 1 defense, Bobo acknowledged they had a slow start to the scrimmage but was pleased with how they responded in the second half.

"It didn't start out the way the defense wanted," he said. "They missed some opportunities with some interceptions that they could have had, but they didn't quit and they kept playing. (The offense was) able to move the ball some, but they were able to get two stops in the red zone and hold them to field goals. They held the No. 1 offense to 40 percent on fourth downs, and the offense's goal is 45 percent. Overall, I thought it was a good day. Now we just need to see improvement from Week 1 to Week 2."

The Rams will have practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before their second scrimmage of camp on Saturday. Continue to check CSURams.com and follow @CSUFootball on Twitter for exclusive looks and content from 2017 training camp.
