This Week in CSU Football History -- Rams Beat LSU in “Death Valley” Thanks to Brown’s 80-yard TD Run

September 26, 1992 – The 1992 CSU football program celebrated its 100th anniversary of Aggies and Rams football throughout the entire season. A special patch on the left shoulder of their uniforms signified the Century Season and several former players were honored later in the season for the All-Century Team. Over the course of those 100 years no CSU Football team had come into a road game with more than 65,000 fans with a win, but on the night of September 26, 1992, history would be made in a very exciting way.
With 69,654 fans in the stands in Baton Rouge at the stadium colorfully known as "Death Valley", the Rams faced the Louisiana State Tigers. The CSU football team was in the midst of an eight-game losing streak dating back to the 1991 season. Coach Earle Bruce knew that going to LSU and playing an SEC opponent was not going to be easy; especially riding such a long losing streak.
Sophomore quarterback Anthoney Hill guided a running offense backed by smash-mouth backs like John Ivlow, Van Ward and tailback Leonice Brown. Ivlow had bruised his way to 152 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown in the season opener in Boulder, proving that Earle Bruce's offence made their statement on the ground. But the Rams had six starters out from injuries, it was going to be an uphill battle despite their best week of practice all season.
The Tigers made their first touchdown on their opening drive of the game and appeared to be taking charge of the game. However, the tough Ram defense held LSU scoreless throughout the remainder of the first half. Led by senior defensive end Kevin Lynch, junior linebacker Brian Schneider and a freshman from Aurora, Colorado who would make six important tackles on the night and go on to a stunning career with the Rams, Sean Moran, the Rams stunned the Tigers.
The CSU offense caught fire in the second quarter scoring a field goal to put them on the board and trail 7-3; keeping the game respectable. However, it was sophomore tailback Leonice Brown who opened the game up with an 80-yard touchdown run to put the Rams up 10-7 at the half. The run tied for the fourth longest in school history to that date and remains tied for 6th-longest today.
The Tigers bounced back with a touchdown in the third quarter and held the 17-10 lead tightly until late in the fourth quarter. Anthoney Hill guided the Rams offence down the field 83 yards on 11 plays as time ticked down to the end of the game. On 4th and goal from the 2-yard line and only 50 seconds left on the clock, Hill took the ball and rolled out looking for a receiver. When he could not find his target, Hill tucked the ball in and loped over the goal line for the game-winning touchdown. The nation's longest losing streak had come to an end as the CSU Rams beat their first SEC opponent in their 100-year history.
Although the 1992 Century Season would end in disappointment, looking back 25 years later, it would prove to be a precursor for the future as seven members of this team would go on to be inducted into the CSU Sports Hall of Fame and half would play for the 1994 WAC champion team.
