BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams and Colorado Buffaloes played a tightly-contested match at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center today, with CU coming away with a 4-3 victory.
The match was the first dual of the season for both sides. Several CSU players were also playing in their first NCAA dual match, and CSU head coach Jarod Camerota was proud of his team's performance.
"It was a good effort by us and shows that we are making progress," Camerota said. "We still have a lot of work today and a lot of matches remaining. We need to get better from match to match."
CSU (0-1) picked up the first doubles victory of the day, with freshman Emily Luteschwager and sophomore Riley Reeves teaming up to defeat CU's No. 2 doubles pair, 6-2.
The hosts answered by winning at positions 1 and 3, however, to secure the opening doubles point.
CSU countered with the first two singles points to stake a 2-1 lead in the match. Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva claimed a point from the No. 3 position after her opponent had to retire from the match, then freshman Priscilla Palermo won her match against Louise Ronaldson at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Junior captain Emily Kolbow gave the Rams another lead at 3-2, following her three-set victory over CU's Chloe Hule at No. 4 (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
CU tied the match back up at 3-3 following a straight-sets victory at No. 6, setting up a match-deciding dual at No. 5. CSU freshman Emma Corwin took the first set, 6-2, but CU's Brigitte Beck responded in a tight second set to win 7-5. Beck would win the third set, 6-4, to seal the 4-3 team victory for the Buffaloes.
"I'm proud of how Emma Corwin competed," Camerota said. "It's a tough situation to be in for your first team match of your college career and I thought she competed well."
Corwin, Luetschwager and Palermo were playing in their first-career NCAA dual matches. Including their fall results, Palermo improved to 8-2 in singles play, while Kolbow jumped to 3-1.
Camerota believes that the Rams playing such a competitive and tight opening match against a quality opponent will be a great learning experience for his team.
"We have to get comfortable in these situations," Camerota explained. "Nobody is going to blow us out this year, and we probably won't blow many teams out either. We will be in a lot of 5-2 and 4-3 matches, and we have to learn how to win those."
CSU's next action will be a pair of dual matches in Wisconsin. CSU will visit the Badgers on Jan. 27 (12 p.m. CT/11 a.m. MT) and then face Milwaukee the following day (1 p.m. PT/12 p.m. MT).
