MADISON, Wis. — The Colorado State Rams recorded one singles and one doubles victory, but ultimately fell at Wisconsin, 6-1, on Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
CSU dropped to 0-2 on the season, while Wisconsin improved to 3-0.
The Rams and Badgers battled in doubles to begin the day. Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau and Lexi Keberle defeated CSU's Riley Reeves and Emily Luetschwager, 6-1. Moments later, CSU's Emily Kolbow and Emma Corwin won at No. 3 doubles to even things up, putting the focus on court No. 1.
Alyssa Grijalva and Priscilla Palermo had things tied up at 4-4 with Wisconsin's Sara Castellano and Melissa Pick, and were facing deuce in the following set. The Badgers pair would win the key point and the set, and went on to win 6-4 to seal the opening point for the home side.
In singles, Grijlava starred for the Rams, defeating Grambeau at the No. 3 spot (7-5, 4-6, 1-0). The sophomore from Compton, Califl., is now 2-0 in singles this spring and 8-2 overall.
Wisconsin swept the rest of the singles matches in straight sets to finish with the 6-1 victory.
CSU head coach Jarod Camerota is proud of his team's effort early this spring, but acknowledged they still have room for improvement.
"I feel good about this group," Camerota stated. "We had a chance for the doubles point but just didn't get it. We competed well in singles, but outside of (Alyssa Grijalva), we didn't play great. We need to keep learning from match to match, use our techniques and relax in pressure situations."
A solid contingent of Rams fans were in the crowd in at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium today.
"There was a great crowd in support of us on the road today, and we really appreciate everyone who came to Madison to watch us," Camerota said.
The Rams will finish their road trip in "America's Dairyland" with a match against Milwaukee tomorrow at 12 p.m. MT.
