Rams’ men retain No. 1 ranking from preseason poll; Rams’ women rise two spots to No. 5 in midseason conference rankings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 10th-ranked Colorado State men's cross country team remains the favorite to win the Mountain West title in 2018, according to a recent vote of conference head coaches. The league released the results of the 2018 MW Cross Country Midseason Coaches' Poll on Monday.

Colorado State men's cross country received four first-place votes and 46 points overall, matching its preseason totals prior to the current season as well as from the 2017 preseason rankings. On the women's side, Colorado State improves two spots from No. 7 in the preseason to fifth in the midseason rankings. The Rams pull ahead of San Jose State and into a tie with Air Force.

Colorado State is predicted to repeat as conference champion after winning its first-ever men's Mountain West cross country title in one of the most dominant team performances in the history of the meet. In 2017, the Rams' 31 points were the second-fewest ever tallied by any current conference member (26 – New Mexico, 2014), and were 28 points better than second-place Air Force (59 points).

CSU was most recently in action at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, when the Rams' men's team defeated 11 ranked teams en route to its highest team finish (sixth of 33) in the 10-year history of the meet. The Rams were led on the men's side by senior Cole Rockhold, who ninth-place finish of 224 runners was the highest by any individual Ram in meet history. Senior Eric Hamer placed 22nd, marking the third-highest finish by any individual Ram all-time at the meet.

On the women's side, Colorado State finished 21st of 33 teams, toppling No. 27 Georgetown, Texas (receiving votes) and five other power conference schools. The Rams' team finish was an eight-spot improvement upon last season's performance at the meet, and was led by a 74th-place finish from senior Bailey Ness. Six of the Rams' top seven from Friday had not previously competed in the championship race at the Nuttycombe, with the exception of senior Ali Kallner (94th on Friday).

The Colorado State cross country team has next week off from competition before returning to action at Pre-Nationals and at the FHSU Tiger Open on Saturday, Oct. 13. Pre-Nationals will begin at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT from the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. The FHSU Tiger Open is slated for an 8 a.m. MT/9 a.m. CT start from the Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria, Kan.
