8 p.m. kickoff necessitates coordination and planning to ensure successful school day and large event on campus

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The first on-campus Border War football game in Fort Collins in more than 50 years will bring big-game excitement to Colorado State campus on Oct. 26, and with it the university and the athletics department have collaborated to plan for the many elements that must mesh to ensure a successful day from start to finish.

Months of planning have prepared the CSU community to successfully handle the high volume of activity and overlapping use of campus spaces for a Friday night game, which kicks off at 8 p.m. after a full day of regular schedules for classes.

In addition, the annual Border War Bronze Boot Run—the ceremonial running of the game ball by CSU and Wyoming Army ROTC units from Laramie to Fort Collins—will take place on Thursday, Oct. 25, finishing in Canvas Stadium at approximately 5:30 p.m. Fans and the campus community are encouraged to take part in running with CSU ROTC for the final leg into the stadium to join in the pageantry by staging in the Moby Arena parking lot by 5 p.m. Those wishing to watch the run as it approaches the stadium may line Meridian Ave. between Plum St. and Pitkin St.

The university community has been working together for the unique experience of a Friday night home game, and has consulted with other universities to learn from their experiences for successfully transitioning campus into game-day mode.

Regular class schedules will remain in place, but some roads and parking lots will not have regular access all day as they normally would. A detailed breakdown of those changes is outlined below, with snapshots of key times of day to illustrate the various changes and transition points.

Fans attending the football game will find detailed information that will help guide them in navigating campus to ensure a successful game-day experience, mirroring as closely as possible the experience they enjoy on a football Saturday. Fans are asked, however, to respect our University community, with classes and labs still taking place even on Friday afternoon, to continue the mission of the academic institution within which Athletics operates.

For faculty and staff the plan provides several options, based on university needs and individual schedules, as approved by supervisors.

Parking lots will open to game ticket holders by 5:30 p.m., after the conclusion of most university business and academic activities.

  • Lot 210R on Hughes Way East

  • Roads near the stadium will be closed no later than 1 p.m. to prepare for the game, and may be restricted use earlier during the day:
  • Meridian between Lake Street and Hughes Way
  • Pitkin Street between Meridian and Shields Street
  • Lake Street between Meridian and Shields Street
  • Parking availability in two lots will be impacted by these road closures. Cars parked in those lots before 1 p.m. must leave by 3 p.m. Cars not already parked in these lots cannot enter the lots after 1 p.m.
  • Morgan Library Lot 425
  • Hartshorn Lot 412

Starting at 3 p.m.:

  • Parking in other university lots and the two garages is available during the day until 3 p.m. All lots, garages, street and meter parking must be cleared of vehicles by 3 p.m., with towing and ticketing starting by 3:30 p.m.

Make special arrangements or use remote parking if you're on campus after 3 p.m.

If you must be on campus after 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, you'll need to consider limited parking and Around the Horn (the on-campus shuttle) options.

After 3 p.m.:

  • Take alternative transportation to and from campus or make arrangements for a ride to drop you off and pick you up. You may need to walk to an off-campus destination because all access roads to campus will be inbound traffic only after 5 p.m.
  • Park at the Research Boulevard lot on the South Campus, but be aware that Around the Horn shuttle service to that lot will end early.
  • Around the Horn will provide regular shuttle service across campus with all stops open until 1 p.m. on Friday.
  • After 1 p.m., the route will be abbreviated (see maps) and serve the east side of campus, with continued service to the Research Boulevard lot until 5:15 p.m.
  • At 5:15 p.m., Around the Horn will transition serve to game day attendees and run only from Lake and College to Canvas Stadium.
  • This means that the last shuttle to serve campus will likely leave the LSC Transit Center at or shortly after 4:45 p.m., completing the abbreviated route to the south, and then transitioning to game service; plan accordingly to catch Around the Horn at a campus stop on the abbreviated route before or by 4:45 p.m.
  • Game-day parking passes allotted to employees via Department Heads will be valid during the game. These passes, which are offered in limited quantities, can be used after 3 p.m. when a vehicle is parked in the area designated by the pass, and those using the pass may leave after 5 p.m. from the east side of campus only.
