Rams’ men 10th in first-ever coaches’ association CCRI, which is intended to be an objective ranking system adapted around the RPI model and other factors
NEW ORLEANS – The Colorado State men's cross country team is ranked 10th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association's (USTFCCCA) first-ever Cross Country Rating Index (CCRI). The organization released its initial CCRI on Wednesday.
The CCRI is comparable to the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) model used by other collegiate sports. According to the USTFCCCA, factors considered as part of the CCRI model include season-long individual performances of that team's runners, actual head-to-head team results and margin of victory or defeat. Additional concepts also in the mix are comparable to elements from the ELO ranking system used in rating chess players and from GolfStat, the NCAA's rating system for golf.
Among the results for CSU men's cross country this year are a first-place finish at the Wyoming Invite and sixth-place finishes at the each of the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational and at Pre-Nationals. Each of the latter two meets featured fields with a myriad of ranked teams, including 19 ranked squads at the Nuttycombe.
Most recently, Colorado State placed sixth of 35 teams in the men's 8k Cardinal Race at Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wis. Seniors Cole Rockhold, Carson Hume and Eric Hamer each finished among the top 25 individuals as the Rams defeated No. 3 Wisconsin, then-No. 15 Southern Utah and three other nationally ranked teams.
The Colorado State cross country team returns to action at the Mountain West Cross Country Championships on Friday. Competition in this year's conference championships will be held from Morley Field at Balboa Park in San Diego. The women's 6k has been rescheduled to begin one hour earlier at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT, while the men's 8k is slated for an 10:45 a.m. MT/9:45 a.m. PT start.
