Emma Corwin declared winner of tournament with 7 sets won
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After two days of competition, the Colorado State women's tennis team bundled up and concluded the third annual Jon Messick Invitational. Despite the chilly weather, the Rams finished the weekend strong, winning 20 out of 23 matches in the weekend overall. Sophomore Emma Corwin won the tournament with seven sets won.
Day two brought great success, with CSU winning six out of six contests in singles. Colorado State Junior Alyssa Grijalva opened against Northern Colorado's Mana Koitabashi, where the pair battled for three sets. Grijalva dropped her first set but came back strong in the second and third sets, notching a win (4-6, 7-5, 6-0). Ram teammates Priscilla Palermo and Riley Reeves had their own contentions, each playing sets with tiebreakers. Palermo defeated Northern Colorado's Madeline Doherty (6-0, 7-6 (3)) and Reeves defeated Northern Colorado's Synclair Larson (7-5, 6-2).
The Rams took a small break in competition, allowing Wyoming and Northern Colorado to play doubles matches and one singles match.
Following the break, CSU jumped back in for more matches against Border War foe Wyoming in singles. The trials against the Cowboys were difficult and lengthy with Ram sophomores, Emma Corwin, Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palermo each competing in three-set matches. Corwin (6-1, 5-7, 6-4) and Palermo (6-3, 6-1, 6-4) cinched wins over their opponents. Colorado State junior Stella Cliffe, a new addition to the Rams' team, also logged a win over Wyoming's Mihaela Kaftanov (6-4, 7-6 (5)) after a close match.
