Rams’ men move up three spots to 14th in this week’s coaches poll, ranked ninth in coaches’ association’s second-ever CCRI
NEW ORLEANS – The Colorado State men's cross country team is ranked 14th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association's (USTFCCCA) DI National Coaches' Poll and ninth in its second Cross Country Rating Index (CCRI). The organization released its coaches' poll on Tuesday and its CCRI on Thursday.
The Rams move up three spots in the coaches' poll following a third-place finish at the Mountain West Championships. That finish also hoisted CSU up one spot in the CCRI to ninth, marking the Rams' second CCRI top-10 ranking since it was unveiled one week ago.
The CCRI is comparable to the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) model used by other collegiate sports. According to the USTFCCCA, factors considered as part of the CCRI model include season-long individual performances of that team's runners, actual head-to-head team results and margin of victory or defeat. Additional concepts also in the mix are comparable to elements from the ELO ranking system used in rating chess players and from GolfStat, the NCAA's rating system for golf.
Seniors Eric Hamer and Carson Hume paced the Rams at the Mountain West Championships, each earning All-Mountain West First Team distinction with respective second and third-place individual finishes. The Rams placed behind only No. 9 Boise State and No. 13 Air Force and ahead of No. 16 Wyoming and Utah State (receiving votes).
Among the other results for CSU men's cross country this year are a first-place finish at the Wyoming Invite and sixth-place finishes at the each of the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational and at Pre-Nationals. Each of the latter two meets featured fields with a myriad of ranked teams, including 19 ranked squads at the Nuttycombe.
The Colorado State cross country team has this week off from competition before returning to action at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah on Friday, Nov. 9.
