Rams open weekend in Des Moines with fifth win of the year
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Colorado State tennis team opened its weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, with a 4-1 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday.
The win bumps the Rams (5-4) back above .500 for the season, while Western Illinois drops to 3-4.
"We played with great energy and we were very vocal," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota, pleased with his team's performance, said. "We still need to pick up our level of play for tomorrow, but we are excited for it."
The Rams began the match with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take the opening point. Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva and freshman Priscilla Palermo combined to take their fifth win of the spring in a 6-1 decision on court No. 1, while junior Emily Kolbow and freshman Emily Luetschwager won at No. 2, 6-3.
Grijalva continued her torrid pace in singles play, picking up her fourth win in a row to put the Rams up 2-0 in the match. The Compton, Calif., native improved to 7-1 this spring with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cary Milanes at No. 3.
Kolbow was the next to pick up a singles win for CSU, winning 6-4, 6-0 over Maria Bessmertnaya at No. 4.
Western Illinois' Mary Bjelica came through with a singles win at position No. 6, but CSU freshman Emma Corwin answered with the match-clinching win over Ana Bjelica at No. 5.
Kolbow and Corwin each picked up their third singles wins of the spring.
