Freshman provides match-clinching singles point in three-set thriller
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Freshman Emma Corwin was the hero yet again for Colorado State, as the Rams came from behind to defeat UCSD on the road, 4-3.
Corwin recorded her fourth match-clinching singles win of the season, defeating Chloe Wight at the No. 5 spot by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11). The third-set tiebreak was the longest set any CSU player has endured and won this season.
The win gave CSU (9-5, 0-1 MW) a spring break split, following its loss at San Diego yesterday.
UCSD, the 14th-ranked team in D-II tennis, won the doubles point with victories on courts 2 and 3. Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva and freshman Priscilla Palermo combined to win at No. 1 for CSU, but UCSD still entered singles play with a 1-0 lead.
The hosts opened up a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles, but the Rams responded with the next three W's. Freshman Emily Luetschwager, junior Emily Kolbow and Grijalva posted consecutive wins to put the Rams up 3-2.
Palermo fell in three sets at No. 1 to Ashley Chao, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 3-6, putting the fate of the match on the rackets of Corwin and Wight at No. 5.
Corwin improved her season record to 7-6 and she has won six of her last seven matches that have ended with a result.
Grijalva improved to 10-3 this spring in singles, while her and Palermo picked up their team-leading eighth doubles victory.
The Rams will be in action next with a home weekend against Creighton (March 24, 1 p.m. MT) and Weber State (March 25, 10 a.m. MT). The bulk of CSU's Mountain West schedule begins March 29 at home against Utah State.
