Corwin snags singles win

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams lost their regular season finale to the Wyoming Cowgirls, 5-1, in a Border War matchup at the University Tennis Complex on Sunday.

Although the Rams (11-11, 1-5 MW) lost the match to the visiting Cowgirls (11-7, 3-2), the outing proved to be a valuable final tune-up for the Mountain West Tournament next week.

Doubles play started well for the Rams, with freshmen Emily Luetschwager and Emma Corwin combining to win on court 3, 6-2.

Wyoming knotted doubles action at 1-1 with a win at No. 2, pinning the fate of the opening match point on the athletes at No. 1. CSU's top duo of Alyssa Grijalva and Priscilla Palermo were leading 5-4, but ultimately fell in a dramatic tiebreak, 7-6 (6). The 200-plus fans in attendance surrounded the first court to watch the match unfold and witness Wyoming take the 1-0 match lead.

Corwin would provide CSU with another boost as singles play began, winning her match at No. 6 over Myiah Scott, 6-2, 6-1.

Unfortunately, that would be the only singles victory for the Rams. Luetschwager was ahead in set 2 following a win in the first, but Wyoming clinched the match with four singles victories, leaving Luetschwager's dual unfinished.

STAT OF THE MATCH…
11-11 – The Rams finish the regular season with their best dual match record since going 14-9 in 2004.

IN THEIR WORDS…
"It was a good battle. There's always a good crowd and a lot of intensity when we play Wyoming, so it definitely has the feel of the tournament. It's a good tourney prep match. We were right there in doubles; we lost it but it was a hard-fought doubles point." – CSU head coach Jarod Camerota on how today's match can help his team prepare for next week's conference tournament.

"It's just small little things when you play a good team. Better footwork here, more discipline there, that's the difference. You only get one or two chances when you play a good tennis team like Wyoming." –Camerota on what his team needs to do to start beating quality MW teams like Wyoming

NEXT UP…
CSU will head out to Boise, Idaho for the 2018 MW Tournament. The four-day event begins April 26. For more information, visit themw.com.
