Wesley awarded scholarship during team meeting Sunday

In their first practice since the first scrimmage of fall camp, head coach Mike Bobo and the Colorado State football team had a solid day of work on Monday on the practice fields west of Canvas Stadium.

"(It was a) good day today," Bobo said. "Gave them a day off yesterday and we were able to watch two hours of film...and go over corrections from the scrimmage and point out some good things from the scrimmage. We came out today and had a full padded practice, worked a lot of different situations against each other, which was good. I thought the energy was good. I thought it was a good practice and it's going to be a long week this week building up to the (second) scrimmage. We have to get better every day and I thought we took a step in the right direction today."

Watching film was not the team's highlight from yesterday, however. During a team meeting, Bobo announced that he was awarding a scholarship to redshirt freshman offensive lineman Barry Wesley. The scene that followed was very lively.

"That's one of the most fun things you get to do as a head coach is to reward a young man who's worked extremely hard and decided to walk on and be a part of this football program," Bobo said. "For this young man, from where he was four years ago when I saw him in a team camp to where he is now, it's just a result of hard work and determination."

After redshirting in 2017, Wesley made the most of his opportunities during spring drills and has continued to impress the coaching staff throughout the summer. Wesley also was one of 12 CSU student-athletes chosen for a unique learning opportunity in May, taking part in the second Green and Global trip to Jamaica, for a combination of service and cultural immersion.

Sophomore wide out Warren Jackson impressed the coaching staff and fans during Saturday's scrimmage and was the team's leading receiver with four receptions for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

"I think Warren has a huge upside, I really do," Bobo said on Monday. "Obviously he has a great frame, he has really good body control, he's a good route runner, he doesn't have blazing speed but he has decent short-area quickness. I think he's improved every single day."

The team wore full pads today but will be back in shells tomorrow afternoon. The Rams will have practices each day this week, culminating in a closed scrimmage on Saturday evening.

The Rams open the 2018 season at home against Mountain West foe Hawai'i on Aug. 25 at Canvas Stadium. Season tickets for the seven-game package which also includes the Rocky Mountain Showdown (Aug. 31) and visits from SEC foe Arkansas (Sept. 8) and Border War rival Wyoming (Oct. 26), are available for as low as $250 by calling 1-800-491-RAMS or by visiting CSURams.com/tickets.
