Rams’ men ranked within the top 11 since week four of the 2017 season
NEW ORLEANS – Colorado State men's cross country has been voted the nation's No. 11 team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) in its weekly national rankings. The organization's week two national coaches' poll was released on Tuesday.
Colorado State men's cross country's four-week streak in the USTFCCCA's regular-season top 10, its longest in program history, comes to an end, but the Rams have been ranked no lower than 11th in the nation since week four of the 2017 season. CSU's only other similar stretch came during the 2003 season, when the men's team was ranked no lower than 10th from weeks two through four.
In the USTFCCCA's regional rankings, CSU's men hold steady at fourth for the third straight week in the loaded Mountain Region, while the Rams are fifth on the women's side. The Rams' men rank behind only consensus national No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 2 BYU and No. 7 Colorado in the Mountain Region, while the Rams' women's squad trails only consensus No. 1 New Mexico, No. 2 Colorado, No. 11 BYU and No. 15 Utah State. The men's team's regional ranking matches its highest all-time from the USTFCCCA, while the women's team is in the region's top five for three consecutive weeks for the first time since 2011.
Most recently, the Rams topped the men's field at the Wyoming Invite, defeating then-No. 16 Air Force, host Wyoming and a partial squad from then-No. 7 Colorado. Seniors Eric Hamer (second) and Cole Rockhold (third) as well as junior Forrest Barton (fourth) combined to take spots No. 2 through No. 4 individually at the meet.
On the women's side, the Rams placed third behind only No. 2 Colorado and only two points shy of Air Force despite two of their top projected returners, Ali Kallner and Macy Kreutz, being unavailable for the Wyoming Invite. Five of the Rams' top seven were newcomers, while four of those aforementioned runners were freshmen. One of those newcomers, Bailey Ness, paced the Rams with a fourth-place individual finish.
The Colorado State cross country team returns to action at one of the most competitive regular-season meets of the year, the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational, next week. Action begins at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT on Sept. 28 from the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis.
