Rams win Mountain West opener at Nevada

RENO, Nev. – The Colorado State volleyball team started its Mountain West Conference schedule with a win over Nevada on Thursday night.
The match began with both teams trading points, but the Wolf Pack strung together five points to take a 13-7 lead. The Rams fought back to get within one point at 15-14, but again Nevada put together a small run to hold a 19-15 advantage. CSU was again within reach at 19-17 before Nevada finished the set with a 6-1 run.
In the second set, Colorado State's offense sprinted out to an 8-1 lead early and extended it to 15-8. Nevada cut into the Rams lead to come within two points at 16-14, but CSU again pushed it back to six points at 22-16 before leveling the match 1-1.
The Rams again took an early lead in the third set at 4-1. Nevada tied the frame at 5-5 and neither team led by more than three points down the stretch. The Wolf Pack led at 23-22, but the Rams took the last three points of the set to take a 2-1 match lead.
The final frame was much like the one prior, as Colorado State took a 4-1 lead, but this time kept it through the match, increasing its lead to 14-8 at one point. CSU led 20-13 late, but Nevada cut it close brining the score within three at 21-18 before the Rams finished the match with a pair of kills and an ace by Sasha Colombo.
STAT OF THE DAY
Olivia Nicholson recorded a career-high 20 digs, while also grabbing a career-high four aces.
NOTES
- Breana Runnels earned her fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 18 kills and 10 digs.
- Kirstie Hillyer followed with 12 kills, while hitting .423 and putting up four blocks.
- Paulina Hougaard-Jensen posted a team-best five blocks, including one solo.
- Katie Oleksak dished out 42 assists and also had three kills.
- Sasha Colombo added three kills on four swings.
- The Rams out blocked the Wolf Pack 9-3 and also out hit them .304 to .172.
- The win was the 12th straight Mountain West Conference opening win dating back to 2006.
- The 2006 loss at No. 21 Utah has been the only conference opening loss since joining the Mountain West in 1999.
