Rams Hold Off Bulldogs 1-0, Remain Undefeated at Home

10/11/2019 7:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After a tough defensive challenge for the Rams on Friday afternoon, they were able to improve to 8-4-1 and keep Fresno State scoreless in a 1-0 victory that had players and fans on their heels until the end.

Within the first eight minutes, sophomore Gracie Armstrong was able to pick up her second goal this year, and she couldn't have done it without the help from her roommate and mentor Caeley Lordemann.

"I have to give credit on that goal to Caeley for how she set me up," Armstrong said. "She thinks so fast, and we like to think it's a roommate connection between us, but we didn't have to say anything to each other, and she sent me a great pass so from there it was just on me to finish it."

The Rams closed out the first period attacking with five shots on net while managing to defend the Bulldogs to only one. However, the roles reversed entering the second period as it began to turn into a defensive stand for the Rams.

Senior defender Halley Havlicek spent almost the entire second period on her own side of the field, in an effort to stop the Bulldogs from attacking and tying it up.

"That second-half felt like we defended for the entire 45-minutes," Havlicek said. "I'm proud of the way we continued to fight and come out on top. This year we have a lot more grit on this team and we're just trying to show everyone how bad we want to compete for a championship."

With three straight conference home games coming up this won't be the only defensive challenge approaching. Head coach Bill Hempen is preparing his team as if every opponent going forward will be their toughest game, and he's constantly reminding and emphasizing the importance of focusing on the single task at hand.

"It's the old coach's cliché, but our focus is always on one game," Hempen said. "We've never been in a position as a program to look any further than the game ahead. We just can't think like that, and our mindset of playing the best that we can at this moment played a role in us beating Fresno for the first time in program history."

This Sunday on Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. MT the Rams will look to continue their success at home as they take on San Jose State.
