Safety first Ram honored on that side of the ball since 2016
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Logan Stewart picked a good time to collect his first career interception, and at the close of Saturday's win over Fresno State, the junior safety had a collection.
His two interceptions and seven tackles in the 41-31 victory led to his selection as the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Stewart becomes the first Rams to win the defensive award since linebacker Kevin Davis did so Oct. 10, 2016. Teammate Warren Jackson won the offensive award two weeks ago after a win at New Mexico.
Stewart, out of Loveland, Colo., intercepted a Jorge Reyna pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 25 yards to put the Rams in the red zone. The play came after Colorado State had thrown an interception in the end zone, and the team cashed in Stewart's offering of a second chance with an 11-yard touchdown pass for the winning points. He finished the game by intercepting Fresno State's final desperation toss into the end zone as time expired.
Stewart, who joined the team as a walk-on, has started every game at safety this year. He ranks third on the team with 55 tackles, his 32 unassisted stops sit second and his two interceptions give him a share of the team lead.
Colorado State returns to Canvas Stadium this Saturday to host UNLV for the State Pride game at 1:30 p.m. The contest will be televised by AT&T SportsNet.
