NEW ORLEANS – Trending upwards at the right time for the championship season is the Colorado State men's cross country team who reentered the USTFCCCA national rankings in the No. 25 spot Tuesday, announced by the organization office.
Across the country, conference championship meets caused ripples of movement down and up for some teams. The Rams jumped the most spots in the poll as they previously were outside of the top-30 at No. 38.
Thanks to an impressive second-place finish at the Mountain West Championships last Friday, CSU leapt back into the top-30 where they resided for 27 straight weeks before tumbling out in week four this season.
In Logan, Utah, redshirt-senior Forrest Barton led the Ram contingent, finishing in second place to earn All-MW first team honors, but most importantly scoring low. Trailing him was four Rams that crossed in the top-20, which added up to 74 points – one point in front of Wyoming for second place. Utah State won the conference title, which garnered a two-spot increase to a No. 20 ranking. The Rams are the next MW team represented in the poll followed by Boise State at No. 27, while Wyoming and Air Force are receiving votes.
Additionally, the Rams increased four positions in the stout Mountain Region to No. 5, passing the Cowboys, the Falcons, Weber State and Southern Utah. Ahead of the Rams regionally is Utah State then Colorado, BYU, and Northern Arizona with the latter group representing the top-3 in the country.
The women's side saw some advancement in regional rankings as well to a tone of three spots. The Rams now sit at No. 7, jumping Utah State, Southern Utah, and Weber State after their fourth-place finish at the MW meet.
Next up for the men's and women's squads is the stacked NCAA Mountain Regional on Nov. 15, located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
