Hicks first CSU secondary player on first team since 2003

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With four first-team selections, Colorado State's football team was represented in every phase of the game as the Mountain West released the all-conference football team on Wednesday.

Wideout Warren Jackson and tight end Trey McBride represent the Rams on offense, safety Jamal Hicks the defense and for the second consecutive year, punter Ryan Stonehouse special teams.

The Rams had no second-team picks, while Anthony Hawkins (kick returner) and defensive end Manny Jones received honorable mention recognition.

The four first-team selections match the most for CSU under head coach Mike Bobo, first done in 2017 when all four players were on offense, while Hicks becomes the first Ram defender named to the first team since Shaquil Barrett was named defensive player of the year in 2013.

Jackson, who was second in the conference in catches (7.7; sixth nationally) and yards per game (111.9, fourth nationally), extends a streak of six years in a row Colorado State has had a first-team wideout. The junior finished the season with 77 receptions for 1,119 yards in 10 games played, totals which rank fifth and eighth, respectively, on the Rams' all-time list for a season. His 214-yard effort against New Mexico was the second-best total in the Mountain West this season, and his 87-yard scoring catch in the game stood as the conference's longest play from scrimmage in 2019.

McBride earns his first honor after leading all league tight ends in catches (45), yards (560) and touchdowns (four). Three of his scoring receptions were 28 yards or longer, and he capped his season with a career night against Boise State with nine catches for 101 yards, his first time cracking the century mark. More than just a target, McBride is punishing addition to the run game and is the first sophomore in the MW to be selected at the position since 2011.

Hicks became the first CSU defensive back named to the first team since CSU Hall of Famer Dexter Wynn in 2003. He was third in the conference in tackles with 117, becoming the first CSU secondary player to have 100 tackles in a season in at least the past four decades of play. The senior had 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and four pass breakups this season.

Stonehouse repeats as the top punter in the Mountain West after leading the league and ranking ninth nationally in average at 46.4 yards per kick, helping the Rams lead the league and rank seventh nationally in net punting (42.45). His 47.0 career average stands as the school record and ranks the junior second nationally in active career punting average.

Jones, a junior, led the team with 8.0 tackles for loss, among them 5.0 sacks. He had 54 tackles on the season, adding five quarterback hurries and forcing two fumbles.

Hawkins was second in the conference in kickoff return average at 26.0, tied for ninth-best in school history, while the senior's career average of 23.8 ranks 10th. He returned the opening kickoff against UNLV 99 yards for a touchdown, matching the third-longest kick return in program history.
