Inside Spring Football: Padded Up

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State football team finished its third day in a row on the field Saturday to open the spring practice period, and donned full pads for the first time this spring. The two-and-a-half-hour workout on a brisk day with wind chills in the 20s was held inside Canvas Stadium, and was filled with high energy and motivation.

"We tried to bring a little energy to practice," said head coach Mike Bobo. "We had board drills and put a number of guys on the board one-on-one and there was excitement in today's practice."
A point of emphasis from Coach Bobo and the defensive coordinator John Jancek in the spring football press conference Thursday was about tackling, and that theme continues to be presented. Being in pads for the first time today provided an opportunity to see whether progress has been made.

"Overall, we have to keep facing the issue," Bobo explained. "We're not where we need to be as far as tackling and missed too many tackles today. I didn't see as many thuds as I needed to see, but that's why we're practicing. We're not going to be a finished product just because we talk about it. We're going to go out there and do it and face the issue every day. The defensive staff is doing a good job of working on tackling and turnovers every single day. Today we had pads, so we had a lot of putting your face in there. It's what you have to do in football. It wasn't perfect, but I did see some good things from them at times. I saw a couple guys strip and cause turnovers, and the ball would get on the ground, which is good to see because we need to be conscious about it."

STANDOUT PERFORMERS: "Our offensive player of the week, just doing things right, is (wide receiver) Brenden Fulton," Bobo said. "The defensive player was (defensive end) Jan-Phillip Bombek. He's just showing a knack for running to the ball and playing extremely hard. (Wide receiver) Nikko Hall was the special teams guy. We try to reward guys, and we had some guys not do the right things that we talked about. Overall, I think the team is in a good place. We're having fun out there, which is good to see."

On which superpower he would choose…
Probably telepathy.

On what inspired him to choose CSU…
It just felt like home. You have your little city area, then the outskirts, and that's sort of how it was at home (Cartersville, Ga.). I always lived on the outskirts. Where I'm from it's the wilderness and animals. Also, Coach Bobo is an awesome person.

On what area of his game he wants to work on the most this spring…
Using more of my off hand. I broke it my freshman year and have been trying to recover ever since. I really haven't had much time but I feel like now it's getting better and towards healing up pretty good. I'm starting to use it more so it's just going to help me better with my pass rush and shedding run blocks. I feel like, overall, just getting that left hand going, it's going to be all up from there.

On his favorite football or coach memory at CSU…
It would have to be (former CSU wide receivers) Coach (Alvis) Whitted. He's down to Earth, he's a cool guy inside and outside of football. He's always there for you when you need him. He's just that ideal person.

On his favorite football memory…
Probably the Arkansas game. It was third down…they had a good ways to go. I remember getting off the ball, the quarterback boots out and (I remember) just running him down. That's the loudest I ever heard the stadium get. It was crazy.

On his favorite social media site…
I don't even have social media.

On his favorite food…
My momma's mac n' cheese.

On whether he likes mountains or beaches better…
I'm gonna have to do beaches. I like it a little warmer.

On who are his best friends on the team…
I don't really have a designated group, but I'm usually with Cam (Butler), Warren (Jackson), Livy (Livingston Paogofie), Ellison (Hubbard). Mostly the guys I came into college with.
