Inside Spring Football: Effort

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The final week of spring practice began Tuesday with a two-hour session under warm, sunny skies, as the Rams put in their 13th practice since beginning spring ball Feb. 14.

"I thought it was a really good day," said head coach Mike Bobo. "I was telling the coaches this morning to have the energy in practice. I feel like we've had 12 really good practices and I thought today was another good day. I thought the offense came out today and looked sharp. Collin Hill looked really really sharp today throwing the ball. Patrick O'Brien had his moments as well, but it was good for the offense to come back and respond a little bit today after Saturday's practice. I thought the defense might have had the upper hand (that day).

The team was scheduled to practice one more time, Wednesday, before Thursday's final spring scrimmage, but an incoming storm has forced the cancellation of Wednesday's session. Thursday's spring scrimmage will be open to the public if it can be held at Canvas Stadium, but will have to be a closed session if the weather forces it to be moved to the Indoor Practice Facility. Bobo told the media after practice that he's been watching the forecast and putting his four years of Colorado residency to good use with his weather knowledge.

"You finally hear the word 'blizzard,' Bobo remarked. "I thought the first time it snowed here that was a blizzard. Now I'm actually seeing the word blizzard when I hit the weather, so I'm interested to see what a blizzard looks like, not the snow showers we've had over the past four years I've been here."

THE ALL-AMERICAN RETURNS: Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup was a visitor at today's practice. Gallup, who was a 2017 consensus All-American at CSU and a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, spent much of the day at the team's facilities inside Canvas Stadium visiting with coaches and former teammates, before watching practice on the field. He played two seasons for the Rams and set the school's single-season receiving record in 2017 with 100 receptions. Gallup made an impact in his rookie season with the Cowboys in 2018, catching 33 passes for 507 yards (15.4) and two touchdowns in the regular season. He added eight more receptions for 137 yards (17.1) and one touchdowns in two playoff games, including a 6-catch, 119-yard effort in the Divisional Playoff against the Los Angeles Rams to break the team's postseason single-game receiving yards mark.

FREE SCRIMMAGE MARCH 14: The final scrimmage of spring football is schedule for Thursday, March 14, at Canvas Stadium, and will be open to the public with free admission if weather permits. Inclement weather is forecast, which may move the scrimmage to the Indoor Practice Facility, and make it a closed scrimmage. A decision will be made by mid-day Wednesday.

On what made him choose CSU…
30534It was my sophomore year of high school, and they do a contact camp for local high schools, and my high school was part of that. On that trip they gave us a student recreational visit to see the rec (center), dining halls--just certain stuff--and when I was walking around campus with my dad, I said 'This looks really cool, I can see myself going here.' I think that was one of the times where I could really see myself going here.

On a favorite professor or class….
Last semester I took Chemistry 107 with Chase Gerold and he just worked with me really well and was really helpful. His teaching style is really helpful, and that was my favorite class because of Chase.

On his major and what he hopes to do with it in the future…
I recently just changed my major this semester to psychology. It was health and exercise science. But sometime in the future, I hope to work with children. I'm thinking middle school or high school. I think there's something around that timeframe where kids feel a little lost and want someone to talk to. So I feel like that's a job for me.

On positive things in the accountability group he leads…
My team does a really good job of not losing points, but another thing is we're not gaining as many points as we need, but that's main thing is we're not losing points.

On his main areas of focus or improvement during spring practice…
For myself personally, I think it's the timing of my hands, whether that be 'pass pro' or ... footwork. Coach (Dave Johnson) puts a lot of emphasis on the first few steps so I try to work on that a lot. Hands, and just communication really, I think those are the top things I need to work on personally not only as a sophomore, but I like to see myself as a leader of the offensive line. I put myself in that role just because we don't have a lot of experience. I'm just trying to make guys comfortable and make sure they communicate because that's the reason why sometimes offensive lines get beat because they didn't communicate right, so they're not tied together.

On his favorite part of being a student-athlete…
Probably the connections that I've met through the administration. I've met a lot of people that are in the administration and have close relationships with them, and that really helps me set up my future after athletics.

On a favorite movie he's seen…
I just saw Captain Marvel. I love the Marvel universe. I also like "How to Train Your Dragon".

On what superpower he would have...
I'd probably go [with] Spider-Man, like Miles Morales [in Spider Man: Into the Spiderverse], he's kind of like Spider Man but he can do more stuff, so I would probably have some super powers like that.
