FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The Colorado State women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day at their final home match of the season, where they battled before falling to New Mexico, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Rams slipped to 7-8 overall and 0-3 in Mountain West play, while the Lobos improved to 8-8 and 1-1 in-league action.
The Rams honored senior Emily Kolbow, marking her final home match at Colorado State. Including today, Kolbow has 47 doubles wins and 31 singles wins as a Ram, with her doubles wins ranking 10th in program history.
"It was a great little celebration for Emily, and she's just playing in doubles, winning that which was great for her," head coach Jarod Camerota said of the senior. "We got our doubles back on track, which was a good thing. I feel good about this team. I always tell them that we're good. Don't ever lose that belief and we just need to keep fighting."
In the third conference match of the year, the Rams notched the doubles point. No. 2 doubles pair of Riley Reeves and Nancy Ghanem won 6-4, but UNM earned the win at No. 3 to leave the point to be decided at No. 1. In that match, the CSU doubles pair Stella Cliffe and Emily Kolbow picked up a tough-fought 7-5 victory to secure the point.
New Mexico clinched the overall victory in a long fought singles battle. Sophomore Priscilla Palermo completed the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4. New Mexico picked up wins at No. 4 and 5 to even up the match at two points each. Nancy Ghanem earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 to put the Rams up 3-2 in the dual. Junior Stella Cliffe hung on in a three-set match at No. 2, eventually losing to New Mexico's Bronte Murgett, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Emily Luetschwager closed out the day with a back-and-forth battle at No. 1, eventually losing to UNM's Ruth Copas 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
"I thought we competed well," Camerota noted after the match. "The result didn't turn out how we wanted, but congratulations to New Mexico on a good win. We tell our team all the time, 'If you compete hard, we'll be proud of you.' We were proud of the way they competed, proud of Stella and Emily. They lost in three sets, but they fought. They competed and that's all we ask for. Some days you win and some days you lose."
