"The Standard" is third Rams receiver drafted in last four years; four other Rams earn opportunities

Colorado State wide receiver Olabisi Johnson was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft Saturday, in the seventh round with the 247th overall selection. Two other Rams signed free agent deals after the draft, and two more earned rookie minicamp invitations.

Johnson finished his career at Colorado State ranked 10th in program history with 2,019 receiving yards on 125 receptions (16.2) with 11 TDs, in 49 career games. He debuted as a true freshman in 2015 and increased his production each season, culminating in a 54-reception, 796-yard season in 2018, averaging 14.7 yards per catch and scoring four touchdowns.

"I am very very excited for Bisi to get an opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings," said CSU head coach Mike Bobo. "He earned his nickname, 'The Standard,' because of the way he approaches his work every day, on and off the field. That work ethic and his talent will serve him well, and I'm excited to see what he will do with this opportunity."

Johnson's selection is the third for a Rams receiver among the last four CSU players to be drafted, dating back to the 2016 NFL Draft. Two former teammates of Johnson's—Michael Gallup and Rashard Higgins were drafted in 2018 and 2016, respectively. Gallup was taken by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round last year with the 81st overall pick, and Rashard Higgins was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, with the 172nd overall pick. Linebacker Cory James also was selected in 2016, in the sixth round, 194th overall, by Oakland.

The Vikings' selection of Johnson is the first by the organization of a Colorado State player since 1978, and the sixth in team history. The Vikings last chose a Ram in 1978, when they drafted punter Mike Deutsch in the ninth round (240th overall) and running back Ron Harris in the 11th round (299th overall). It is the highest the club has drafted a CSU player since selecting defensive end Mark Mullaney in the first round with the 25th overall pick in 1975.

Following the draft's conclusion, four other Rams earned opportunities with NFL teams. Wide receiver Preston Williams confirmed to CSURams.com that he is signing a contract with the Miami Dolphins, while linebacker Josh Watson has confirmed that he is signing with the Denver Broncos. Linebacker Tre Thomas has received a rookie minicamp invitation from the Indianapolis Colts and running back Izzy Matthews has received a rookie minicamp invitation from the Houston Texans.
