Bobo and staff run crowd through all three phases

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – For one night, a select group of Ram Club members and season ticket holders were offered a peek behind the curtain by Colorado State football coach Mike Bobo and his staff at Canvas Stadium.

Monday's Coaches Film Room (with 250 registered guests) detailed what a week of preparation entails. The checklists he and his staff go over and the tendencies they look for – on their roster and across the field. The staff was honest about what the Rams were good at in 2018, even where they didn't meet expectations. After sitting through offensive, defensive and special teams meetings, they all came together and listened to Bobo spell out what the Rams have been doing to remedy a 3-9 mark.

"It's good to see what the coaches are actually doing, and the insight they were able to give us," said David Tomsick, as they were broken up into three groups and rotated through sessions in the Hall of Champions, the team room and the club level. "They broke it down, we saw the film and we saw the whole of how it comes together.

"It's nice to watch the little details you don't normally see. I've been following football for a long time, and it's a lot different at this level."

Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Dave Johnson, assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Ronnie Letson and running backs coach Bryan Applewhite laid out the timeline of an entire week of preparation and discussed some of the plays they felt would work in the comeback win over Arkansas.

Special teams coaches Chase Gibson (linebackers) and Nick Jones (tight ends) broke down tape as well, even showing what went wrong in the Florida game. Then they invited two guests up front to show just how little time a punter has to get off an attempt, each earning a "Comatose" T-shirt for their participation.

Defensive coordinator John Jancek tried to cover as much as he could in the 20 minutes he was allotted, going over game plans, what they look for in recruits and injecting as much humor as possible for the guests.

"I enjoy this. It's fun, and we don't have anything to hide," Jancek said. "We wanted to share with them the inner-workings of what we do."

The night capped with Bobo addressing the entire crowd, expressing his gratitude for their support and walking them through the EDGE program and what exactly it means. He spoke about the sweat equity expected from the entire program, and might have gone longer if not for the first official team meeting of the summer at 8:30 p.m. He highlighted players who have been excelling, even a few who have not. Through it all, he gave them reason to laugh, offered up no excuses for the past and detailed the concept of putting players into leadership roles to push the program toward the set goals of a Mountain West championship.

By the end of the evening, CSU graduate and season-ticket holder Mike Grooms was ready for the season to start. He appreciated the invite, and the chance to get a little closer to the program and the coaches who oversee its operation.

"Seeing every aspect of offense, defense, special teams, and how it's getting put together and all the preparation that goes into it … It gives you a sense of how much work is involved with game preparation, and what the coaching staff goes through to prepare us for the game on Saturday," Grooms said. "It shows behind the scenes what it takes to get there instead of just showing up for the game. Oh, they may have run that play because of this reason, and you get to see the ins-and-outs process of why they run certain schemes."
