Rams women's soccer team releases 2019 schedule
Team remains in state for six-game stretch in October
Â
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State's women' soccer team will open the season at home, featuring a challenging non-conference schedule with a unique twist of a home-and-home series with Marquette.
Â
Coach Bill Hempen's squad opens the 2019 campaign at home, with an exhibition against Missouri a big test for a roster featuring 11 new players. The Rams remain at home with games against Marquette and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville before hitting the road for a trio of contests. The Marquette double came about as both teams were still searching for an opening-week contest after the first game (at Marquette on Sept. 22) had already been scheduled.
Â
"I'm going to have 11 new kids show up and we're going to be on the road a little bit," Hempen said. "They're going to be great challenges for us. I think they're right in our wheelhouse as far as where we need to be competing. You go to Gonzaga, and they have a beautiful facility, and we've never been to Eastern Washington. Grand Canyon has a great facility to play in, and I've never been to Valpo or Marquette, so it's something different."
Â
A big change is the lack of in-state rivalry games, with the dropping of the Colorado Cup which featured Colorado and Northern Colorado; Denver is still on the slate.
Â
In the month of October, the Rams will stay close to home, starting with in-state Mountain West games at Colorado College and Air Force, followed by a string of four consecutive home dates. It is a stretch of the season where Hempen hopes the Rams will gain some steam, especially with it falling in a key portion of academic focus on midterms.
Â
"Even though Colorado College and Air Force are road games, that's six games in a row in state," he said. "That helps. There's so many things that go into this, as far as keeping your kids focused and it's the time of the year where it's midterms. That certainly helps the process. Those October games are going to be pretty important for us to be at home for that stressful time in the academic year."
Â
Colorado State closes the regular season with the Border War matchup at home on Nov. 1.
Â
The Rams are coming off a 6-9-4 record, 3-6-2 in conference play, their best season since the program was launched in 2013.
